KEOTI FORT, SIRMOUR TEHSIL, REWA DISTRICT, MADHYA PRADESH
The fort at Keoti was likely built in the 15th Century, though some believe it to have been built in the 13th Century. The common belief is that it was constructed by Nagmal Dev Singh, son of the 17th ruler of Rewa, Shalivahan Singh, who ruled from Bandhavgarh.┬аKeoti fort is located towards the east of water falls on the Mahana river. While the fort has been looked after by the State Department of Archaeology, MP, this ancient fortification has been earmarked by the State Government to be converted into a heritage hotel. The fort stands intact, but some sections have fallen on rough times due to neglect. The main entrance gateway is an imposing bangladar-style roofed doorway that opens into the main courtyard squared by abandoned cell-like rooms. Further down, the walls of the fort stand on a cliff overlooking the stunning Keoti Falls. The dropped rock face from here has a couple of caves cut into the face. The path is stony along the perimetric walls, and quite deserted. Keoti Fort has been etched in history for a particularly bloody battle fought during the Sepoy Mutiny.
Thakur Ranmat Singh, hailing from Mankhari village, of Satna district, MP, held the rank of a┬аSardar┬аin the service of the Maharaja of Rewa. He was impressed & influenced by the boldness of other rebel leaders and led a crowd of 2000 to besiege the bungalow of Osborne. Osborne managed to escape and the rebels followed their way into the Chitrakoot jungle, where they organized and formulated their further plans. Thence, Ranmat Singh fought several battles in different locations including Nagod, Bhilsain, Chitrakoot, Nowgong and Keoti, and proved to be a cause of terror for the British. In order to formulate his capture, Osborne resorted to exerting pressure on the Maharaja of Rewa. The latter, although friendly with the British, was sympathetic to the Thakur. He was eventually arrested and sent to Banda where he was found guilty of murdering Europeans and was hanged to death on 1st...
