Pawankhind is a historic mountain pass located near the city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is most famous for the Battle of Pavan Khind, which took place in 1660 between the Maratha Empire and the Adilshahi Sultanate. The Maratha forces, led by the brave warrior Baji Prabhu Deshpande, were outnumbered by the Adilshahi army. Despite this, Baji Prabhu and his men held off the enemy for several hours, allowing Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, to escape to safety. Baji Prabhu and his men died in the battle, but their sacrifice is remembered as one of the greatest acts of heroism in Indian history.
Today, Pawankhind is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can hike to the top of the pass, where they can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside. There is also a memorial to Baji Prabhu Deshpande at the top of the pass.
