Pechiparai Reservoir is a reservoir located 43 kilometres (27 mi) from the town of Nagercoil, near the village of Pechiparai in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India.It was built by the British chief engineer Humphreys Alexander Minchin (1868 – 1913) were a pillar has been erected in remembrance The reservoir was formed by the construction of the Jincy Dam, which was built across the Kodayar River about 1 mi (1.6 km) below the confluence of the Kallar, Chittar and Kuttiyar tributaries. The catchment area of the reservoir is 207.19 km2 (80.00 sq mi), and the depth is 14.63 m (48.0 ft). The dam is a straight gravity type masonry dam 425.5 m (1,396 ft) long and 120.7 m (396 ft) high above the deepest foundation. There is no inspection gallery.
The water from the reservoir is used for both irrigation of crops and for drinking purposes, which has led to conflict between farmers who want to use all the water for their crops, and local authorities, who don't have another place to draw drinking water from, for supply to the urban areas. Read moreThere are no tickets in pechiparai dam. So you can be as free as you want. But there are you little facilities and not much to see. From the parking lot you just have to climb a few steps to reach the dam which is under heavy maintenance and construction. It is also to know that you cannot travel the entire distance across the reservoir. But you can still see as much as you please and you may even see trespassers but don't imitate them and go through. Not worth it and you can still see the aqueduct. There is a little garden there and at the dam in the evening the atmosphere is photogenic literally don't go in the afternoon. This review is ask of may 2019. Deconstruction and maintenance maybe over in a few months and the DAM will be accessible later. You can also see monkeys there and when I when the went there there were not many tourist only the residents nearby. Maybe even wait for the rainy season when the dam will be filled with water again. That is as of July October of 2019. Sorry I don't have any pictures. But considering it as one of the the biggest dams in in South India it is good...
