A visit to Butterfly Research Centre,Bhimtal
In Northern India, surrounded by the misty mountains of the Uttarkhand State in Bhimtal there is a birds' nest made of butterfly wings. People call it Butterfly Research Centre (BRC) of Bhimtal but I call it my second home. There lives the intellectual scientist, Lepidopterist and the researcher Mr. Peter Smetacek.
Light comes from the windows as early as 5.30 in the morning. I awoke and lay lazily in the bed for few minutes and started hearing the birds chirping and the wind shaking the branches of the tall Deodar trees. A distant roar of a vehicle that climbed the mountains heard in like a dream. I felt completely calm and peaceful at mind.
A variety of Indian food was served at the table in a small lobby that faces the lawn. We enjoyed our food watching the butterflies who nectared in the Buddleja bush and the birds searching for food in the lawn. The dinner always got tastier with the conversations with Mr.Smetacek who has a wide knowledge on many subjects. While dining we heard the rare Mountain scops owl's call and went on searching it after dinner. The place might be one of the best places to watch this rare owl in India.
Mr.smetacek is a musician and he played the guitar beautifully in the late night. We visited Sattal (seven lakes) which is about 3 km walking distance from the BRC. If travelled by a vehicle it is about 10 km. The famous place for photographing birds called 'Bird Studio' is at Sattal. Many birders from around the world visit the place and stay there hours in photographing birds. Some visit the beautiful Sattal lake and engage in activities like kaoking. Walking path from BRC to Sattal also is a very good area for birding and we found the elusive Black francolin in a thicket by the road. It was one of the two birds that we could not photograph.
The closest town to BRC is Bhimtal. This busy small town will provide everything you need for the day to day life. The vast Bhimatal lake beautifies the city giving a calm impression midst of all the hustle bustle. When we visited the town the Jacaranda trees were in full bloom and it was a feast to the eyes. Nainital is about 22 km far from the BRC. It is a beautiful and large city where many tourists do not forget to visit. The famous 'Tibetan market' where many shops are owned by Tibetans has everything that you will need to take your home back as souvenirs. We travelled uphill past Nainital to Kilbury. The beautiful forest by the road at Killbury is a paradise for birds. We spent the whole evening there watching birds. Nandhaur Tiger reserve was our next destination. Though tigers were reluctant to be present that day we observed many butterflies. The 8 km path that runs through the reserve ends at Nandhaur river. One can spend hours there enjoying the serenity of the place expecting a tiger to come down to the river for water.
The total number of bird species we observed was more than 95. In addition we could observe the Rhessus Macaque, Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur Red Muntjac, Sambar and the Himalyan Serow.
The house is about 150 years old and rennovated and therefore I will not recommend it to someone who expects the luxuries of modern life. But if you are a person who has a desire for the past this will be one of the best places to stay.
The hospitality and the loving and caring attitudes of the owner and the others of the BRC made my departure quite impossible. The strong bond which attached me deeply to that place make my dreams sweet by turning me to a walker along the paths of that forest. I yearn to feel the warmth and love that I felt in that birds' nest again though I am now thousands of miles away from that magical place which I call my...
