By far the worst airport I've ever been to in over 30 years.
You can't go in the building, even to go to the bathroom, without going through a lot of unnecessary pain at the entrance first. There's a security guard at the door and you have to show them your passport and a detailed itinerary to get in the building. They inspect it closely for a while so it takes a long time and there's a long line at every door that takes like 30+ minutes to get through.
And you have to go to the right door for the right airline at the right building. There's multiple buildings that aren't connected with a long walk and often construction on the sidewalk between them, so you have to drive to the right one. Even if you're at the right building if you're at the wrong door you'll just wait forever to get in, be told to go to a different door, and then wait forever again to get in the building.
Once you enter you're not allowed to leave, even if you left your luggage outside with someone who dropped you off. And they can't get in either. So your ride has to wait in line to get to the security guard at the door, give them the luggage, and then they take it inside to you.
There's wifi at the airport but it's so bad there basically isn't wifi and you have to get data there ahead of time. You need to scan your passport and boarding pass to get into the wifi, and you have to scan it at a specific wifi kiosk. There are not many of these, they're hard to find, and they're only in specific locations. Like when you ever they say they're at the gate so you have to check in, go through security, and navigate to your gate all before you can use wifi so it's really only if you're just sitting around waiting for your flight at the gate. When you connect it's not even very good, it's slow and unstable, often disconnecting or not working.
At check in they don't allow you to bring a personal item if you're male. Only if you're female, which is very sexist and also your gender is their assumption so it can easily be wrong, especially if you're non binary or trans or are just ambiguous. I even arrived at this airport with a backpack, but departing with the same backpack isn't allowed.
If you're handicapped and you have a caregiver you're not allowed to go in the same line as them through security. There's a specific line only you're allowed in so a staff member has to push you through it. And no one speaks English so it's difficult to go through that line by yourself without a caregiver to help you with the communication barrier. They also squeeze your wheelchair through a metal detector which of course goes off, then you come to a small elevated platform with just enough space to stand on and they motion for you to get on it. It's like seriously I'm in a wheelchair, there are multiple reasons I can't go on that platform.
Their lounge is also pretty bad. I was there a short time and then left to wait at the gate because that's better than their lounge. Everything looks good and pulls you in, then you find out it's all bad. The lounge looks nice but you soon find out it isn't. It's poorly designed with everything too close and laid out to give you even less space. And there just isn't much seating or tables in general despite the bad layout.
Also the food looks good but is bad too. Things are really tough when they shouldn't be, kind of tasteless, bland, and there's a small selection of not very good dishes. Some examples are dosa that's bland, has very little filling, and is very tough. Or a chicken curry where every chicken piece is mostly big bones with lots of tiny sharp bone shards that are extremely difficult to find and remove, which can be very dangerous.
The bathrooms are also dirty, not well stocked with a lot of empty supplies, and poorly designed again with the same problems I mentioned before like not...
Read moreOur recent experience at Chennai International Airport (MAA) was a blend of cultural delight, modern infrastructure, and a few operational drawbacks. As our flight descended over the sprawling expanse of Chennai, the first thing that struck us was the sheer size and scale of the city. From the aerial view, Chennai appeared vast and vibrant, with its dense layout of buildings, traffic arteries, and a patchwork of urban development that truly reflected the city’s status as a major metropolitan hub of South India. The landing was smooth, and as we taxied to our gate, we noticed how well-maintained and organized the airport grounds were — a promising start to our arrival.
Once inside the terminal, we were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and cultural aesthetics of the airport. Chennai Airport has clearly made an effort to give travelers a taste of Tamil Nadu's heritage. One of the most charming aspects of the terminal was the authentic Tamil-themed décor, including artistic displays and images of traditional Tamil dishes adorning the walls. These visuals added warmth and identity to what is often a sterile space in many international airports. It was a thoughtful touch, reminding passengers — both domestic and international — that they have arrived in a land rich in culture, flavor, and history. These small but meaningful details gave us a positive first impression and made our wait inside the terminal more enjoyable.
However, not all aspects of our airport experience lived up to the same standard. The baggage claim process was notably disappointing. After arriving at the baggage carousel, we had to wait for an extended period before our luggage arrived. There was a clear delay, and the lack of proper communication or announcements only added to the frustration. For an airport of this scale and passenger volume, the handling of checked-in baggage seemed inefficient and poorly coordinated. It dampened the otherwise smooth arrival and left many passengers, including us, impatient and irritated. We hope this is an area the airport authorities work on improving, as such operational hiccups can affect overall traveler satisfaction significantly.
That said, one of the most commendable features of Chennai Airport is its excellent connectivity to the city, especially through the metro service. The airport is directly linked to the Chennai Metro Rail, and the station is conveniently attached to the terminal. This seamless integration makes it extremely easy for travelers to access different parts of the city without needing to depend on taxis or other forms of transport. For first-time visitors, this is a huge advantage — the signage is clear, the station is clean, and the connection is just a short walk from the arrival area. This efficient public transit option not only saves time and money but also reduces the stress of navigating a busy city immediately after landing.
In conclusion, Chennai International Airport offers a fine mix of traditional charm and modern utility. Its clean environment, cultural highlights, and ease of access through the metro are all significant positives. However, the slow and inefficient baggage claim process is an area that needs immediate attention. Despite this one drawback, the airport left a generally good impression on us, and it certainly set the tone for what was to be a memorable experience in the vibrant city of Chennai. Whether you’re a tourist or a local returning home, the airport gives you a warm Tamil welcome — just be prepared for a bit of patience at the...
