This temple is on my wish list, and visiting it assures me of its fascinating history. First of all, nobody exactly knows when Hong San Kiong was established; the written records are dated only to 1926. As this temple has been reconstructed and rebuilt a few times, we only can infer from the centre of the temple, which is a wooden structure of four pillars and table of worship, that the core of this temple must be from around the 18th century. This is a style of the classical Chinese temples in Temanggung, Tuban and Lasem, that came from that period. The temple worship a few deities, the prominent one are Thian Gong and Kong Tik Cun Ong. Despite its history, it is modest and strategically located at a cross roads. Oral tradition put the Tan (or Chen) family as the temple’s sponsor. However it is difficult to adjust just one family as the patron. The region itself was an agricultural important spot since the classical period of Java, in the 14–16th century. It is common to attract Chinese farmers & merchants since a longtime. Another important aspect of this temple is the Chinese puppet show, that currently is one of the remaining of Chinese art left in East Java. It was said that at the early 20th century a master puppet player, Tok Su Kwie came to Hong San Kiong, with his entourage, form the Quanzhou Province in China. He stayed there, and played the “potehi” or so called now the Chinese puppet show at the temple. Along the years, especially after the Indonesian independence this show attracts people all over, either the Chinese descendants or natives as well, thus creating the Gudo temple as the epicenter of the “potehi” show. After a prohibition of more than 32 years, since 1998 the grandson of Tok Su Kwie, namely Toni Harsono has continued this tradition and together with the local artisans, including a talented craftman, Tan Soen Bing, recreate & revive the puppet show. Most puppet masters now are the local natives and this show has been attracting...

Beautiful | Quiet | Religious

It's unbelieveable worship place in small Gudo town (Jombang region).

You could not believe that there are beautiful Chinese architecture behind the main building as shown in the photo.

This is a worship place for 3 religion (Tridharma) : Buddha, Konghucu, and Tao.

There is special room for Guan Yin/Kwan Im/Avalokiteshvara (Goddess of Mercy, Boddhisattva of Compassion). You also could hear the calm chanting of Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa.

Guan Yin also famous with 1000 arms reaching out to comfort, save and protect all beings.

May all living beings be...
