Some of the best fabric in Ireland without a doubt! Studio Donegal is a must-see for anyone with a love of fabrics and weaving. Even if that’s not your thing they are absolutely worth a trip just to see one of Ireland’s most important and historic artistic traditions still thriving to this day. I had such a lovely time chatting with Eithne about life and our treasured memories of textiles. She immediately made me feel right at home and treated me like family. As a young American doing a solo trip in Ireland it meant the world. I also had an incredible time watching some of the weavers work their magic on the looms they have upstairs, huge mechanical beasts that take a masterful hand to tame. The quality of the tweed fabric is truly world class and it’s all because the folks at Studio Donegal wear their hard work on their sleeves. Their inventory is well-priced given that each piece will easily last a lifetime or two. There are plenty of options for folks on a tight budget too, especially if you’re willing to engage in the craft and get some gorgeous woolen yarns or scrap tweed as I did. Once back in the U.S., I also ordered the most beautiful charcoal vest which they handcrafted and shipped to me in record time. They are the real deal folks!

Read moreMy family visited this mill when we were touring Ireland. The owner showed us through the mill, explained their process and how they keep their Victorian era spinning machines functioning. We were then taken to the upper floor where the weavers were hand making their blankets and fabric. It was a wonderful experience to see the process. Of course they also have a shop to buy their beautiful blankets, pillows, hats, scarfs, clothing, yarns etc. I encourage you to go see for yourself but you can also support them online. This business supports craftspeople who need to be supported and thrive in this day of industrialization and cheap, throw away manufacturing. I worry about their survival during COVID and the lack of...
Read moreWorth the visit! The lovely local wool shop owner in Ballycastle suggested we stop in to where she gets her wool from, aka Studio Donegal, and it was just a great stop. Not only are the products beautiful and for sale, but you can go upstairs and see how everything js made on the 100+ year old looms, and further still manufactured in the sewing room. The owner, Tristan, was lovely and helpful, and all the staff upstairs were kind. We love our new wool wear and highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in how they make their wool...
