Have done this peak many times in races and hikes. Difficulty depends on which route up you take. The Kings yard route is by far the easiest, and most people should be able to do it without much hassle. This approach is from the south. The other two routes ive done are far harder, more technical and far more rewarding 1) the western approach from Angelsboro via Templehill is very steep at points, has varied terrain and exposure (gets very misty unless it's a very sunny day). This approach requires good footwear (hiking shoes), appropriate fitness, and a map or gpx as you can easily get lost. It is around 9km long. The first few kms are uphill and steep, then a short drop down and then climbing up lyracapul, along the stone wall and finally up to the peak. It's a tough slog. Many portions of it have a 20-35% gradient. Highly advise packing some wet gear (it is the boggiest route) and hiking poles if you are a slow climber 2) The northern approach from Cush Carpark is quite tough, though shorter (around 6.5km), but going up cush, galtee beg and galtymore will test your fitness. Again portions of this have 30-35% gradients but shorter than the angelsboro route. This route has the best views, in my opinion. Ground is very varied but can be very boggy and is mostly small mountain trail. Good shoes, fitness, and patience are required for that. Gpx or a map would be handy for this, too. If looking to do this hike a few times, I'd recommend starting with the kings yard route, then coming back to do the cush route and finally try the angelsboro route. For an adventure starting in kings yard and going up to the peak and then onto Cush and back would be a good day out. There is nothing better than reaching the top on a fine day, whipping out a flask and having a mug of tea with a biscuit or sandwich admiring the views
The last thing I'd say is regardless of the time of year or weather, please bring a small backpack or bag for spare clothes and wind/waterproof jacket. Even on a nice day the weather can change very quickly. It can get very nasty with...
Read more1st attempt failed as we were unpreped big time:) 2 ppl, not in shape what a fail. My takeaway : propper hiking shoes, walking sticks and plenty of water. We had the shoes so next time we will be ready. Check the weather before start for sure, its a mountain so it changes fast. Got up till the big stonepyramid and from there it gets hard. If you go right from here the trail ends after a while. Turn left and be really ready to go all the way. The views are stunning. The car park is small but there is ample space before it on the roadside. Make sure to close the 2 gates after yourself and if you think your dog will be fine think again. If you are fitt less than 5 hrs and your back at your car, if not waaaaay more. NOT an easy trail by far so i would not take kids with. But its awesome, will be back for 2nd...
Read moreThis hike exceeded my expectations. Parked at Galtyway Climb car park and walked directly up. Weather moved in fast, so what started as bright blue skies ended up extremely foggy and misty at the top. Not great views this time, but I’ll definitely be back. Things to be aware of: -No dogs allowed (literally signs stating that they will be shot 😳) -Trail up can be very rocky and uneven. Easy to sprain ankle -There are great views even halfway up, but if going to the top you should absolutely have good waterproof hiking shoes. The terrain can be very boggy and wet even on dry days -The top will be much chillier than the bottom. Be prepared with proper clothing -Gets steep near the top. Climbing sticks can be helpful for the ascent/descent -This is an epic...
