Review of Croagh Patrick (The Reek) – Ireland’s Holy Mountain
Croagh Patrick, affectionately known as “The Reek,” is more than just a mountain—it’s a spiritual, cultural, and physically invigorating experience nestled in the heart of County Mayo, Ireland. Standing at 764 meters (2,507 feet), this iconic peak offers breathtaking panoramic views over Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside. But don’t let the views fool you—this climb demands both physical stamina and mental determination.
The Hike: A Test of Endurance with a Rewarding Finish
The hike is a roughly 5-hour round trip, though for many (like us), it can stretch to 6 hours or more with necessary breaks. The trail is steep and rocky, with the final ascent being particularly challenging due to loose scree and sharp inclines. If you're not used to hiking, prepare for a real workout. It’s a climb that will leave you gasping—not just from the physical effort, but also from the sheer beauty of the views.
When to Go The best time to hike Croagh Patrick is during the summer on a sunny, dry day. Avoid rainy days—wet rocks become slippery, the wind picks up aggressively, and the entire experience can shift from challenging to dangerous. Always check the weather forecast before you go.
What to Bring Be prepared. Pack like you're climbing a real mountain—because you are. Here’s a quick checklist:
Sturdy hiking shoes Comfortable, layered clothing (temperatures can swing quickly) Light jacket with a hood (wind and cold are common even in summer) Cap or hat for sun protection Camera or phone for capturing the views Plenty of water, snacks, and protein bars for energy Hiking stick (helpful on steep and rocky parts) Toiletries – there’s a toilet halfway up and on the top.
Who Can Hike? Surprisingly, you’ll see a wide range of people attempting the hike—from children to seniors in their 60s. It's inspiring, but don’t underestimate it. You’ll need good health, stamina, and if you have any conditions like asthma, bring your medications and take necessary precautions.
Pet Policy Officially, dogs are not allowed, but it’s common to see hikers with their pets. If you do bring a dog, be respectful and mindful of others, and clean up after your pet.
The Experience Reaching the summit is an emotional and almost spiritual experience. Many hikers take a moment to reflect, rest, and enjoy a picnic with a panoramic view. The mountain is steeped in history—associated with Saint Patrick and centuries of pilgrimages—which adds depth to the journey.
Final Thoughts Climbing Croagh Patrick is more than a hike; it's a memorable life experience, especially when shared with friends and family. Prepare well, stay safe, and take it at your own pace. It’s tough, but the reward at the top is worth every step. All the best on your adventure—go make memories that will...
Read moreBeautiful experience. Hi have you heard about the Rock of Las Lajas, this Sacred Rock reveals the real image, and pure beauty of our Heavenly Queen Mother Our Lady❤️The Rock of Las Lajas, has no ink, no painting, no sculpture, revealing Our Lady real image 💕❣️We feed from the bread of life, when we copy Jesus life examples, pointing to Our Lady saying Behold you're Mother seen in the Rock of Las Lajas❣️Gaze upon Mother within the Rock of Las Lajas image, Behold our Mother then lead everyone to Our Lady like Jesus did on the Cross at Calvary❤️God wants us to bring the Rock of Las Lajas image into our homes, and gaze upon the Rock of Las Lajas image. This is the meaning of John bringing Mother, into his home, this is what God means, when he said Behold you're Mother, because Behold means gaze upon, and this is how I wrote so many books, by gazing upon the Rock of Las Lajas image. The knowledge and wisdom from the Bible gives you the understanding, in difficult times, to keep shouting the words Behold youre Mother while pointing to Our Lady in the Rock of Las Lajas image, without understanding, you will fall, not knowing Mothers hand is always here to pick us up. Mother awaits our daily love within the Rock of Las Lajas image, whoch leads to us experiencing, the pure love love of God within one another, within our Marriages and relationships. We must lead everyone to our beautiful Queen Mother Our Lady, because this is the example Our Father Jesus, set for us to follow with his life, teachings, Crucifixion, and resurrection. The meaning of life is simply lead everyone to our beautiful Queen Mother Our Lady, for Mother is our biological and beautiful Queen. The Queen of Heaven, Queen of the Universe, Our Lady and Jesus are married, they are one God, and we are their Royal children, who must above all love our Heavenly Queen Mother Our Lady. Amen
So, will you pick up the Cross, as Jesus did, embracing pain, shouting Behold you're Mother while pointing to Our Lady, or maybe you will help someone carry their Cross, or maybe you will ask for forgiveness, when youre...
Read moreA really amazing climb and manageable for most fit and able people.
The climb itself is not too difficult (I would say I’m an averagely fit person) - can be a little tough on joints when climbing down. A few in my group are not the most active people (and they do regularly vape) - they definitely found it quite challenging but after said they would be happy to do it again.
If you are planning a trip to visit/hike I would recommend 2/3 open days when booking in advance, so you have a higher chance of having a selection of days with possible different weather forecasts. As you can see from my photos it wasn’t a very clear day for us and at the top we couldn’t see anything below - still 110% worth it - but if you want to have higher chances of good weather book a 3-4 nights locally - plenty of beautiful places to stay.
If it is raining the rocks would be quite slippery going down.
Would recommend walking sticks if you’re a little shakey/ your balance isn’t the best or if you feel you may need a little assistance.
We found windbreakers, layers and light rain jackets to be favourable and sensible footwear - although some do this hike barefoot!!
We started around 7 AM on a Saturday and so there weren’t too many people - from 10am onwards the trails get rather busy - so something to keep in mind!!
We loved our hike and look forward to returning in future to do it again!
