A wonderful, informative tour you must do.
Located on the edge of a small, nondescript commercial estate Alma Distillery can be easily missed - we drove past even though we were looking closely for it - but oh so easily remembered.
Six of us booked the inexpensive (€20 each) tour. We were greeted by Hugo, co-founder and, as it turns out, a delightful, informative guide. Despite needing to converse with us in English, his third language, he expertly walked us around the distillery, patiently explaining each part of the process and answering a wave of questions. His evident passion and enthusiasm for Sicily, the process and his products swept us along, through the distilling plant to ageing room and bottling area before we settled down to sample the products.
This isn’t any old rum. For a start we discovered the sugar cane was a crop introduced to Sicily by the early Muslim rulers and then lost to the island for centuries. So the reintroduction of cane production, on their own land, allows Hugo and his colleagues to create a rum that is truly of the island, constructed from fresh run juice rather than from the molasses-led process that so many of the worlds rum producers use.
The product is presented in high-strength representations of the two cane varieties grown - it’s incredible how different they taste - and an award-winning blend of the two.
They also produce a gin or two and a botanical rum that you taste too.
A great highlight of our trip. Cheers to Hugo...

Don't be intimidated if you know nothing about making spirits - we didn't - the guides will put you at ease straight away an there's no such thing as a...
