A visit to the Horti Leonini in San Quirico d'Orcia offers a fascinating glimpse into one of Italy's oldest public gardens. Steeped in history, these gardens, designed in the 16th century, provide a wonderful sense of stepping back in time. The historical significance is palpable, and it's genuinely impressive to wander through a space that has been open to the public for centuries. From a botanical perspective, however, it's fair to say the gardens are a bit dull with not much variety of plants. If you're expecting an explosion of diverse floral displays or exotic species, you might find it somewhat understated. The layout is very formal, typical of the Italian Renaissance garden style, with precise geometric patterns, neatly clipped hedges, and statuary. That being said, what they lack in plant diversity, they certainly make up for in maintenance. The gardens are evidently very well cared for. The hedges are impeccably trimmed, the pathways are clean, and the overall presentation speaks to a meticulous dedication to preserving its historic charm. In essence, Horti Leonini is more about the experience of a historic, formally structured garden than a vibrant botanical collection. It's a peaceful and beautifully maintained space that offers a quiet escape and a strong connection to the past. Go for the history and the serene atmosphere, and appreciate the careful tending of this ancient...

In the middle of the sixteenth century Diomede Leoni, a native son of San Quirico d'Orcia without vast fortune or artistic training, decided to build a garden in his hometown which he named "Horti Leonini". Over time, the garden has been faithfully maintained, yet both its creator and its history have been almost forgotten.

From his letters and other research we find that Diomede (1515-1590) was working as an "agent" in Rome during the heady days of late Renaissance. While working for both a Venetian cardinal and the Medici’s, he befriended Michelangelo and was at his bedside when the artist died in 1564. Given this fact and the timing of the construction of his Horti, it is very possible that Michelangelo had a hand in its design. How much he was involved we will never know since there are no documents that directly link the artist to the garden. Nevertheless the garden belies a grandness that prompted the historian, Isa Bella Bersali, to write that the garden showed the “hand of an architect unknown and important”.

Entrata libera e aperto tutto l'anno. ⏱Tempo di...
