If you are atop the peak of Monte Adone, you ought to be aware of the importance of this place to the Liberation of Italy from German occupation. Monte Adone, and it's neighbouring peak of Monterumici are great defensive positions which dominate the southern approaches to Bologna. As such, the German army had fortified the two peaks and garrisoned them with a whole division, 8th Gebirgs Division. Against them the Allies threw the US 88th "Clover Leaf" Infantry Division. On 14 April 1945, an air assault and a barrage of 75000 artillery shells opened the American attack upon the peaks, but the German mountain troops were unscathed by this, and therefore well prepared when the US assault went in. However,the Americans fought through to capture Monterumici (446m) and Monte Adone (655m) and, in so doing, broke the back of the German defences before Bologna.
