1554年、当時の琉球国王・尚清によって創建された歴史ある禅寺です。 その昔、この地が毎晩明るく光を放っていたことから、それを知った尚清王が使いを遣わせたところ古鏡が発見されました。 このことがきっかけで霊社が建てられ、それ以来、村人たちのあつい信仰を集めてきました。 特に、大きな岩の前にある権現堂は神々しく、独特の雰囲気があります。 戦火を耐え抜いた石畳や石段からも、歴史の長さを感じられます。

琉球王朝時代に王朝から庇護を受けた官寺の１つ。 照太寺は流罪の「寺入り刑」の場所ともなり、500日以上の流刑者が収用されたとの事。 空と海、山の気が大きく感じる伊江島で唯一、仏さまの気を感じられるところです。 本殿には、大日如来、不動明王、聖観世音菩薩がお祀りされています(^^) 権現堂の背後の洞窟は拝所になっているようですが確認できませんでした。

前を通りかかったらなにやら呼ばれた感じがしたので立ち寄りました。 臨済宗の寺ですが、由来を読むと天照大神と関係があるようです。清王（1527～1555）の時代に、このあたりに毎晩光があって、近所の人々は不審に思って、この話が国王にも届き、使者を送り調べさせた所、古い鏡を発見され、これは伊勢の天照大神の残したものと言う事になり、寺社を建ててお祭りするようになったようです。 一角にある権現堂にその鏡が奉納されているそうです。その裏の洞窟にある鍾乳...
