I took the gondola from the parking lot at the bottom of the mountain and hopped aboard with my border collie! I was pleased that a larger breed of dog was allowed on the Gondolas saving me from climbing and extra 4 or 5 hours! Mt. Nyukasa in the Suwa District, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is located about 190 km (118 mi) northwest of Tokyo, and is easily accessible by train, bus, and gondola. From the gondola, it is a super easy hike to the peak where you can rise above cloud formations and the tree line. From the peak, you can enjoy the sights of nearby mountains including Mount Kaikoma (2,966 m/9,734 ft), which is part of the Minami Alps mountain range in Yamanashi Prefecture as seen from the peak of Mt. Nyukasa looking south. If the weather is good, you can even catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji. Looking northwest from the peak of Mt. Nyukasa, you can see the peaks of the South Yatsugatake (lit. 8 peaks range) volcanic mountain range, which is alpine in nature with very steep slopes. The volcanoes erupted thousands of times between 600 and 800 years ago, with the highest peak, Mt. Aka, standing at 2,899 m (9,478 ft). They eroded over time while Mt. Fuji was erupting so much that she became the highest peak in Japan at 3,776 m (12,388 ft). Finally, you can also see the Japanese Central Alps from the peak of Mt. Nyukasa. The tallest peak in the Central Alps, Mt. Kisokoma, rises to an elevation of 2,955 m (9,698 ft). These alpine peaks are located in Nagano Prefecture, approximately 241 km (150 mi) northwest of Tokyo. On your way up, you can choose to cross a marshland and soon thereafter a small grove of cedar trees enveloped in beard moss (Usnea longissima). This a lichen grows on dying cedar trees where loss of a canopy has opened up an opportunity for this fungi to grow and slowly take over the tree. There is a small patch of trees covered in this moss just before you reach the treeline of Mt. Nyukasa.    Read moreIt is a good mountain to climb summer season, but the best of this mountain is in the snowy season. During the ski season, climb to the summit station by using the lift of early morning first lap of Fujimi ski area . From there, climb the snowy forest road and the snowy field, you can stand on the top of a snowy mountain with no one in about an hour! In addition, there is also Manaslu mountain cottage at the end of the forest road so it is safe. From the top with a nice view, large panoramas such as Mt. Ontake, Mt. Norikura, Northern Alps and Mt. Yatsugatake are spreading. If you wear skiing in the snowy season or carry to this place, You can slide down to the foot of the Fujimi ski resort. Once you taste this real pleasure, you may not love to walk down in the season without snow. It is so nice and pleasant to ski down! Again, the best season for this mountain is a...
