We (two adults and experienced divers, and two adolescents with little experience in diving) booked the dive trips with Umicoza in advance based on the fantastic reviews on Umicoza. But don’t be fooled by the reviews - they have nothing to do with the reality.

Safety first We received no proper boat briefing, the boat safety and facilities. The boat in general appeared to be in a bad shape. The tank holders were either broken or worn out from the sun, saltwater and usage. They hardly held the steel (!) tanks in place when the boat was anchored. Once the boat was moving and the weather and wind conditions became rougher, the tanks fell out of the holders, and toppled to the floor.

There was no sufficient dive briefing, no entry order, lacking of enough space, people were sitting on the floor and in passage ways, which made navigating on the boat especially when the sea conditions where rough very difficult.

There was no staff on the boat during the dives. Which appeared to me very unsafe: a) what if the boat got loose of the anchor, b) what if one of the divers has an emergency and needs to get on the boat, needs help or needs to get on land quickly, c) what if you forgot equipment on board, such as a camera? In all of these cases, no one could offer help, as everyone was in the water diving.

I cannot say anything about the diving itself. Being an experienced dive master and given the dive site conditions, I choose to guide my family on my own and check on their safety and well being, as I haven’t had any trust in the dive guides ability to perform a safe and enjoyable dive for everyone.

Staff Though the staff was approachable in general, no one actually acted accountable or cared about their divers on board. Just a few examples: The staff talked badly about their clients knowing they wouldn’t be able to understand what they were saying. No one, except once, helped to carry the dive gear to the boat No one checked if the tanks were open No one offered to help to set up the gear, especially with the novice divers No one bothered to help the divers in the gear or assist with getting up with the heavy steel tanks and getting safely to the platform When two of us got sea sick during one very rough boat ride, no one actually bothered to bring water, or ask if he/she can help with anything

Facilities and Service The diving operation is located close to Nagura Bay. The operation has three showers, one toilet and a communal area. There are two bigger freshwater tanks, one to clean BCDs, fins, masks, suits, etc. and one for the regulators, cameras and computers.

It’s more an open air operation. We were unfortunate with the weather, so there was little to no space to sit in a dry area when more than 5 people arrived at the dive operation. The operation seemed to be pretty run down.

We never started the first dive before 11 am, though being told by the crew to be at the dive centre at 8:30 am.

The boat itself, as already mentioned, was not in a good shape. Stuff and divers choose to place their wet suits on racks in the dry area. The organisation on board was chaotic: bags, equipment, tanks - all piled up at some point, and you had a hard time to find your stuff. There was no freshwater tank for camera equipment on the boat. Water and cold tea was provided on board, but not enough to serve all the people on board.

Summary I cannot recommend to go diving with Umicoza. You might get fooled when the surrounding factors are perfect (weather, water, viz, marine life, mantas, etc.). But if things get rough, you don’t want to dive with this dive operation. After three days diving with Umicoza, I refused to go diving another day with Umicoza because I had serious safety concerns. Additionally, I felt that the diving experience especially for our young divers, who need more support, help and attention, was bad...

Terrible diving center, the rental equipment is in very bad condition and expensive. Unsafe dive planning against any rule. The only thing they care is to take your money.

i'm an instructor with more than 5000 dives and i was a diving center owner for 6 years and this is my exprience diving with umicoza:

I bought a 2 dive package.

The first dive of the 2 dives pack will be at 7 mt max depth even if you are a really experienced diver on a dead coral site where the most interesting thing you can see it's clown fish that they call 'nemo' really professional!!!

I rented the BCD, my size is large. i could't try it at the diving center because it was already on the boat.

The first BCD they give to me was a medium/small size, i asked to have a large, but it was loosing air from the back, so they give me another small size and even this was loosing air, so first dive with bcd loosing air....

back on the boat they give me another BCD an extra small.... that could't fit on me..... and i asked them to change it and they give me another small size BCD....

The second dive was planned from diving center guide at 18 mt max depth !!!! So deeper than the first! Against any safety rule!!!

I was the only diver other the guide to have a dive computer.... So i'm a really experienced instructor and i could manage the situation, but a normal diver will be in serious trouble.....

Tank are full of rust and i don't know when they had last manteinance.... but tanks in that condition will never pass a revision.

At the end of the day when i complained about the situation i had weird answers....

They say that the first dive is a check dive ( but they sell it like a normal dive).

One of the instructor told me that if you dive less than 10 meters is not a dive so there's no safety problems!!! (If is not a dive why i've to pay it like a dive)

Another one told that this is normal in kabira area.... and so on!!

At the end the only thing they say to me for all the day it's sorry!!!

So in my opinion if you don't want waste your time and tour money and risk your life choose another...

TLDR: expensive shop and bad attitude to foreigners, good equipment

Paid 26000 for 3 dives and rental equipment, the following day I did 4 dives (+rental equipment) with a different shop and it cost me the same (3 dives there was 23000).

Found this dive shop because it has an English site. However, from the moment I sent a message to the club I felt like the person who responded, who turned out to be the instructor, doesn't really welcome foreigners. Her answers were short and unhelpful, as if she's doing you a favor by answering you. On the day of the dive she turned out to be disrespectful and unhelpful as well (although her english was good), not explaining about the dives (at least in english - I didn't know how deep we're diving, how long etc.). She also made a lot of frowns and angry noises (even underwater, when I told her that my air is running out). She also took some pictures (which are advertised as part of the service, but I was only in 2 of them) it seemed like she's more interested in taking picture than giving us a good experience.

She seemed to be nice to Japanese people, so maybe it's just the attitude to foreigners?

The equipment, boat driver and the boat were good though. No complaints there.

If you're a foreigner, use your money in a dive shop that respects and welcomes you - there are plenty of those on Ishigaki.

The following day I dived with a different dive shop and...

The experience was wonderful from start to end. The instructors were super friendly and supportive. They accommodated all our needs and much more than we could imagine. The dives were extremely beautiful with all the corals and fishes. The guides were skilled and experienced. They arranged vegetarian meals for us. They also gave us Ishigaki pineapple and shikuwaza ice popsicles. The pick up-drop service was excellent with best local guidance around the place. Kudos to the instructors: Ibuki san, Ricky san, Shun san.

Chise and her colleagues made our diving trip a really memorable experience. Chise is a diving instructor who will actually want you to learn so Umicoza is not a school that will do everything for you (preparing gear etc) although they are very helpful and communicating. Chise also took us home as we didn’t have a car and stayed on a remote part if the island. Lunch in their garden was also very fun. Thanks Umicoza diving school!
