福島県いわき市の中心駅である。いわき市は福島県で唯一の最大人口を持つ都市でもある。福島市（県庁所在地）より多い年もあった。東北地方全域の場合、仙台市から2番目の人口を有している。乗り入れ路線は常磐線（原ノ町・水戸方面）・磐越東線（郡山方面）である。さらに特急ひたち・ときわ号（品川・仙台方面）が発着する。首都圏・北関東・被災地の復興地域・仙台圏にまたがる壮大な交通アクセスに富んでいる。注意点は時刻表をしっかり確認しましょう。例えば磐越東線郡山行きは一日5本だけです。8:30～13:27の間は列車が来ません。時刻表を見ると一目瞭然です。非常に驚きました。特急は1時間に1本やって来ます。東京からおよそ2時間で行ける場所でして、関東の雰囲気を彷彿とさせます。 It is the central station of Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture.
