I usually would give a mountain 5 stars but the thick growth of haimatsu and other thick bushes and low trees growing across the trail made the trail barely discernible and will slow you down so much. Just walking/running freely was impossible for a very long time and can make you insane. There was bear poop on the trail as well, so put a bear bell on your bag and bear spray always readily available in a waist belt or somewhere easily accessible. Coming from the seaside, there’s a long steep dirt road. I’m not sure if the free onsen is still near where the dirt road ends and the trail begins. The abu hanging around there in the summer will eat you alive, biting at any bit of exposed skin. Aside from that it’s lovely. A memorable ending to the Niseko traverse if you challenge the whole traverse from Hirafu to here. A recommended alternative beginning/end for the Niseko traverse is Iwanai dake, with a clear and well maintained trail....
