One of the strangest experiences I've ever had. This place is in the boonies in a once booming town of Kaga Onsen. You can see this huge Kannon (Guan Yin or Avalokitasvera) statue from the station. It's next door to a completely abandoned hotel which I think was called Kaga Kannon Hotel or something. This whole area reeks of bubble period waste and over spending, it feels so surreal. The temple grounds are devoid of people, sometimes even no caretakers. But it is actually one of the more interesting temple in Japan. All together I spent about an hour and a half here, enjoying the hot summer bizareness. There is a short walking tour of the life of the buddha with some huge room with hundreds of Kannon statues at the end.
