If there were a place charmed with magic, this may as well be one. I was introduced to this place by local residents, telling me it's a must see for their pottery which incorporates the volcanic ash. "The clay comes from here, the ash from here, and the flowers where they get the color from also." I had never occurred to me that a pottery can look beautiful, feel so comfortable in my hands, and even sound like a wind chime. Every piece is unique, so you have to come and experience them. Of course, the hospitality of the shop owners were beyond expectation. It's hard to imagine a mother and daughter ran the whole shop and made the pottery all...

We had an amazing time visiting and were warmly welcomed into the shop. Despite our poor attempt to speak Japanese, the owners made us some green tea and spoke with us while showing us their amazing collection of products made using the Volcanic Ash from Sakurajima. It was hard not to buy everything, the quality is amazing and each item is unique and beautiful. I left with a mug, 2 Vases, and some small sprites

After 2 weeks in Kagoshima Prefecture, this was easily a highlight. If I'm ever back, I'll be sure to pop in again and pick up some more.

Thank you for welcoming us, it...

This shop was the highlight of my visit to Sakurajima. The pottery crafted by this lovely Mother and Daughter is exquisite and uses ash from the volcano creating a meteorite effect to the clay.

They were so kind to us, offering green tea and pickled daikon when we arrived (and even coming after us to point us in the right direction to the bus stop when we went the wrong way!)

Make sure to visit this shop while visiting...

Planning a trip to Sakurajima? Don't miss visiting Ougakutougei, Sakurajima Pottery. We rode a taxi from the port to the shop. Upon arrival the owners greeted us with Tea and pickels. They were incredibly kind and hospitable. They make beautiful pottery using volcanic ash and hot spring water. They also gave us a ride back to the port. We will never forget our visit to Sakurajima!
