When the cat island can heal you โ€ฆ! I recently embarked on a visit to a renowned cat island, celebrated for its vast population of adorable feline inhabitants. The journey commenced with a pleasant 20-minute boat ride from the port, offering enchanting vistas along the way. For an optimal experience, I highly recommend securing a spot on the boat's top deck to savor the breathtaking views.

As I disembarked, I was immediately greeted by a multitude of cats, their presence lending an air of whimsy to the island. It was heartwarming to witness their enthusiasm, seemingly aware that food-bearing visitors had arrived. However, it was disheartening to observe that not all of these furry residents were receiving adequate care.

Sadly, I encountered one cat with a wounded and bleeding ear, evoking concern for its well-being. It is unfortunate that some cats on the island appear to be lacking proper attention and medical assistance. It raises the important question of whether measures are in place to ensure the overall welfare of these beloved creatures.

Despite this drawback, the island remains a captivating destination for cat enthusiasts. The sheer abundance of friendly cats and their willingness to interact with visitors is undeniably charming. Nevertheless, it is crucial to address the issue of cat welfare, ensuring that injured animals receive the necessary support and implementing preventive measures to avoid such incidents...

I visited in Q4 2022. Bit off the beaten path, Yushima ๆนฏๅณถ is a wonderful cat island off the coast of Kumamoto ็†Šๆœฌ, via ๆฑŸๆจ‹ๆˆธๆธฏ in Amakusa ๅคฉ่‰. Cats everywhere. Locals have even built shelters for them, who mainly gather in groups along the shore, though a good number (I reckon I missed quite a few) are tucked away in people's gardens and alleys. Houses are built along the slope, Favela-style, with tombstones (surprisingly in immaculate condition) in the very back/top. Feed one cat and a half a dozen will come running. Cats are healthy, many will gladly rub against you and play even without the bribe of kitty treats. A few are neutered most are not. I'd estimate ~100, cats definitely outnumber households. Bring food -- any eateries shown on Google Maps are either defunct, closed much of the year or are more like local B&Bs that only accept seasonal pre-bookings via phone...

It's not such a big island, so I think you can enjoy it enough, but it is also recommended to spend a relaxing time at a guest house.
