Shiraishi Island — Local services in Kasaoka

Wonderful hiking experience. I went there on a very quiet Sunday. Hard to meet anyone on the streets but it was fine. The children liked it and so did I. There are boats coming and going 4 times a day. The last boat leaves at around 4 pm.

Although the mountains there aren't too tall, the terrain is rugged and makes up for that. We went up and down several mountains in a matter of 3 hours. It was awesome, and pleasantly tiring.

あまたの巨石が立ち並ぶ様が遠目にも見事なうえ、晴れた日に山道を行けば絶景奇勝の連続です。海と空と山をあわせて堪能できるのは離島の山歩きの醍醐味です。 白石島は島そのものが国指定名勝でありながらも観光地としての認知度はいまひとつのようで、日曜朝の二時間弱の山歩きで誰とも会いませんでした。途中、家主のいない蜘蛛の巣が相当あったことから、たまたまではなく本当に人通りが少ないと思われます。 見ごたえと混雑度の乖離がこれほど大きい景勝地は他に思いつかないのですが、これはひとえに広報不足と、それにともなうアクセスのわかりにくさが原因でしょう。白石島をふくむ笠岡諸島と本土はフェリーもしくは高速便によって結ばれていますが、船の種類のみならず運航会社、出発港も到着港もまちまちで、そのうえそれらを一括管理する窓口が島はもちろん本土にもないため、一見の観光客には何がなんだかという感じです。ぜひ行きたいと思う人を増やさず、気軽に行ってみようかという人に対して敷居を高くしていれば、人が集まらないのも道理です。その点だけ...
