Mt. Eboshi — Local services in Minamiaso

A very good alternative to the other harder hikes in Mount Aso. Mount Eboshi is easily accessible by bus from Aso station, and is an intermediate hike I'd say. It takes a little more than an hour walking to the summit from the Eboshi bus stop, and then a little hour to go down.

The view from the summit is absolutely breathtaking and very scenic. You'll see the Aso Kuju national parc and the Aso caldera. You'll also walk through the grassy fields of Eboshi if you're there during the right season (I did the hike in September).

started the hike in the fog but it cleared up as we summited. it was a short hike with a 1hr moving time (40mins up 20mins down). we spent a lot of time at the top as the views were incredible. the hike is very accessible from the carpark with a rest area, restaurants, gift shop, and museum. there is a clear trail with some aids up and down...

目前に広がる草原は 「草千里」と呼ばれ、 烏帽子岳の側火山として活動した千里ヶ浜 火山の火口跡です。 千里ヶ浜は浅い二重の火口で直径約1kmに達します。 内側の火口 は草千里の東側凹地で、 南北に約500m、 東西に約250mのだ円形をしています。 草千 里中央の小高い丘は「駒立」といい、 内側火口の縁の一部です。

この一帯は、 芝生のような草地になっていますが、 これは昔から放牧地として利用さ れ、牛や馬が長くなる草を食べ続けているからです。

春、麓に放された牛馬は、夏になると涼しさと草を求めてこのあたりに集まってきま す。 そして、 秋風が冷たくなるころ、 飼い主に連れられて帰って行きます。 この雄大な 自然の中で牛馬がのびのびと生きてゆく姿は、そのまま阿蘇の風物詩のひとつになって います。

草千里の背後にそびえる山は、阿蘇五岳の一つに数えられる 「烏帽子岳」 です。 登り やすい山で、頂上からは360度の展望が開けます。 眼下には、北に阿蘇谷、 南に南郷谷、 遠くには九重山や雲仙岳を眺望できます。 このことから別名「国見山」ともいわれてい ます。
