I recently visited Himakajima and overall it was an interesting short trip. I went there mainly for swimming, and while the sea was not the clearest I have seen in Japan, it was still good enough to enjoy a refreshing swim on a hot day. One nice option on the island is to rent a bicycle and explore. The roads circle around the island, and the scenery is pleasant, but be prepared for some very steep slopes that can be quite tough if you are not used to cycling.
