大隅半島の南端にある岬で、本土最南端です。 一帯は「佐多岬公園」として整備されていて、入り口には無料駐車場と観光案内所、トイレがあります。 駐車場からは、トンネルを抜けて遊歩道を歩いて岬の先端の展望台まで行くことができます。遊歩道は少し距離はありますが、なだらかな勾配になっていて、車イスでも通行できます。 展望台からの眺望はとても素晴らしく、晴れた日には海の向こうに薩摩半島と開聞岳や、三島村の竹島・薩摩硫黄島・黒島、屋久島、口永良部島、種子島、馬毛島といった島々が見えます。 真下に広がる海も透き通ってきれいです。 展望台のさらに先の小島の上には灯台もありますが、立ち入りはできません。 「佐多岬灯台」は日本初の洋式灯台として1871年10月に完成して、2021年でちょうど150年です。

小学校時代、社会の授業に集中出来なく地図帳をずっと見ていた人もいるでしょう、地図を眺めながらそこで色んな場所に興味を持った事でしょう。先っぽ、すみっこ、行き止まり、何か混ざるとこ、実に興味深いです。ここは日本本土の先っぽ最南端、佐多岬です。今や地図アプリで現地に赴かずして写真を見たり動画を見たり出来ますが、地に足を着けてこその制覇、これが体験です。思い出してくるでしょう、地図を眺め、ここには何があるのか、どうなっているのか、どんな景色か。ここ最南端は海がよく見えました。

鹿児島空港からレンタカーで1200位の出発で、高速道路経由の無休憩で到着が1445位になる。 佐多岬の手前(入り口ゲート)までは並みの山道でアップダウンが激しく、運転に慣れていない人がハンドルを握るのは危険。 佐多岬ゲートを過ぎると人の頭ぐらいの落石やマングローブみたいな木々の垂れ下がる枝(大量)によりさらに運転難易度が上がるので、運転に慣れていても極めて慎重に運転しないと危険。 佐多岬に近くなると手前に31度線のパーキングがあるが、奥まで行くとトイレと観光案内所付きの大きめなパーキングへ着くので勘違いしないように(私はした)。

上述の通り、レンタカーに傷が付くトラップが多く、事故の危険も高いので、山道での運転経験がある人が車を走らせることが非常に望ましい。

なお、鹿児島空港から行くと途中で自衛隊鹿屋基地の資料館真横を通るが、こちらは1630までなので、両方とも寄りたい人は先に資料館側を先に...
