I've visited many times and spent numerous days here. One such time was when I attended Shingyo Dojo in 2008, the formal and final training to become a Nichiren Shu priest. English is not the first language spoken here yet it is not difficult to find someone who can help with communication. Depending on when you visit you may be able to witness one of many special celebrations, commemorations, or festivals that are held throughout the year. These events are not always widely publicized and so it can be a hit or miss thing. It is helpful if you know someone who is Japanese and familiar with special dates on the Nichiren Buddhism calendar. The belief is that if you complete the climb to the top you will be assured of attaining enlightenment. To this let me add that some believe this is only true if you don't use the hand rails for support along the way. It is a steep climb and the step rise height is quite large in some places. Take your time, enjoy...

Special mention to jorokodo! The uphill was a gruelling 1000m elevation but it offered many great spots to take in the sights and feel the tranqulity of the forest. There were many ancient tombs along the route, some dating as far back as the edo period. This mountain hike is still under the radar so not many hikers even on a sunday. An absolute must do if you are...
