With some language skills I've been to several places over Japan, Kusatsu is definitely one of the more grandiose onsen place. One problem I noticed about Gunma prefecture is the women's treatment of the men. I thought bad local customs were phased out during "bunmeikaika" of the Meiji period onwards.
Another as other reviews pointed out, is despite the town thrives on tourist money alone, many of the onsen places were not opened to tourist.
