Our tour bus stopped at the Roadside Station Taira to learn about washi paper and how it is made. There is a sitting area where we watched a very interesting video on how long and hard of a process it is to make the 500+ year old, handmade paper.
Next we went into another building where they actually make the paper. Everyone got to make four postcards by dipping a screen into the fibrous water. We decorated them and they dried them for us. It was a very fun and memorable experience and the staff was excellent, kind and helpful. We took ours home as souvenirs.
As an artist myself, I also loved the store that had incredibly reasonable priced artwork on washi paper. We bought a large scroll and I recently framed it at home. A place for really great, hand made, authentic, artisan goods. A very memorable day in a very unique, rural area that I was very excited to see and it was one of my favourites...
