After an early morning session at an outdoor onsen on a mountainside in Hokkaido, I sat in a lawn chair beside our campervan in the glow of the moon as it gently sat on the Sea of Japan. I was overcome in a warm, humble, slightly amusing way remembering the first time I heard the phrase "kachou fuugetsu."
It sounded like something delicate. Something fragile you hang on a wall or tuck away in a poem.
But in my lawn chair moment, it was an invitation.
âFlower, bird, wind, moon.â Four simple things. The world, stripped down to what itâs always trying to show you, if youâd just slow down long enough to notice.
Itâs the way a blossom doesnât rush to bloom. The way a bird doesnât care whoâs watching. The way the wind moves like itâs got nowhere in particular to be. And the moon? Well⊠the moon just shows up. Same as always. Patient. Steady. Beautiful without ever trying.
And hereâs the quiet advice hiding in all that:
Pay attention. Look closely. Let the world teach you how to live.
We spend so much time chasing things: titles, schedules, money, stories about who we think weâre supposed to be.
But maybe the real story is simpler.
Maybe itâs in a breeze chilling your face. A branch leaning just so. Two cranes gently strutting among the reeds. The hush right before the moonrise.
Flower, bird, wind, moon.
Turns out, nature figured it out a long time before we did.
All weâve got to do⊠is...
Read moreThis was our favourite onsen while we were camping in Hokkaido. But also one which we felt necessary to protect. Hereâs hoping some useful tips to share with fellow travellers how to be conscious while using a public onsen shared with locals living in the area.
Instructions: It is a MUST to shower first before entering the onsen.
How to: Take a 20L bucket (found around the entrance of onsen). Use a pail to manually fill it up taking water from the onsen directly. If you need, use the cold water hose to adjust water temperature. This 20L pail of water is for you to shower, encouraging saving water too :)
RETURN: After use, please return the empty bucket and pail neatly to the onsen entrance so next person can use.
Do use soap but please make sure your soap water drains into the ground away from the onsen. Do not contaminate the onsen with your soap water.
You may now enter the onsen!
Tie your hair when entering the onsen. You may lower the water temperature manually by putting the cold water hoses (found at the side) into the onsen. However, please check with the locals if they are OK with this first.
Please donate in donation box min 500yen!
It was a great shower in nature! Remember you are borrowing the space of locals, be considerate...
