添田町をはじめ、みやこ町、東峰村、日田市、中津市山国町には彦山四十九窟や、修験道跡、神社などが点在しています。 奉幣殿は、細川忠興が妻ガラシャの為に建てたと言われ、ガラシャの命日には十字架が空に浮き上がると言われています。 彦山で修行をし、加藤清正の家臣となった実在の人物毛谷村六助は、歌舞伎の「彦山権現誓助剱」という演目にもなってます。 山内にも六助の修行した場所として、旧六助旅館跡、大南神社(大南窟)などがある。
