We did a combination rib boat then paddled canoes around part of the protected part of the lake, which is only accessible from the water. It is an area sacred to the Ainu people. The guides were lovely, one spoke English and had just been to Australia! Note that you will climb into the canoes on the water from the rib boat, but the guides are great at making it easy to clamber...

The boat tour is fully in Japanese so you'll need some level of understanding to appreciate all the explanations about the history of the lake, including its formation, nature and geology.
