湯布院の母なる山である由布岳から挾間、賀来を通り、別府湾へ注ぐ総延長55km、流域面積650km2の一級河川です。別府湾へ注ぐ河口側から、県道22号線、国道197号線、県道21号線の順に、弁天大橋、舞鶴橋、滝尾橋、そして宗麟大橋と大きな橋が架かっています。弁天大橋横には、車椅子マラソンの発着地となる市営陸上競技場や大分舞鶴高校があります。また、新垣結衣さんと三浦春馬さんのダブル主演で撮られた映画「恋空」の撮影地でもあります。河口付近には、漁船の他、全国的に有名な大分県のレーシングカヌー部が練習していて、カヤックやカナディアンが浮かんでいます。広い河川敷は散歩に最適です。夏場には花火大会が開催されていたこともあります。
