Lake Naivasha – A Tranquil Rift Valley Gem
Lake Naivasha, located in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley at about 1,884 meters (6,181 feet) above sea level, is a beautiful freshwater lake known for its serene environment, rich biodiversity, and accessibility from Nairobi (just around 90 km away). It's one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, and its name is derived from the Maasai word Naiposha, meaning "rough water"—a reference to the lake's sudden storms.
🌿 Natural Beauty and Wildlife
Surrounded by papyrus swamps, acacia woodlands, and flower farms, Lake Naivasha is a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers. The lake supports over 400 bird species, including:
African fish eagles
Jacanas
Kingfishers
Herons
Pelicans
It’s also home to hippos, which are often seen lounging in the water or grazing on nearby grasslands. You might spot giraffes, zebras, and antelopes in the surrounding areas, especially in the nearby Crescent Island Sanctuary.

We took a guided boat tour, and it was nothing short of amazing. In the early morning, we were lucky enough to see hippos being fed, which was both thrilling and humbling to witness. At one point, our guide bought a few fish from the fishermen, and I was puzzled at first about what he was planning to do with them. To my delight, they were for the eagles! He whistled with his fingers and threw the fish into the lake, and soon the mother eagle swooped down, followed by the father eagle. It was absolutely mesmerizing to watch these majestic birds in action.
The tour lasted a little over an hour, and seeing the animals in their natural habitat rather than a zoo brought such peace and joy. Lake Naivasha is a place where nature truly comes alive, and it’s a must-visit destination for anyone...
