Mt Kinangop Hike Excursion 1)Hike Review Rising to an elevation of 3,906m (12,815ft) above sea level, Mt. Kinangop is tough and awe-inspiring at the same time. It is the second-highest peak of the Aberdares and delivers a challenging but immensely rewarding hike. This duality has earned it the moniker “Mother Kinangop”. Hiking through the Mutarakwa Route immerses you into a scent-filled forest of cypress and pine trees. The trail becomes increasingly steep and wet as you approach the moorland toward the rocky summit. The entire hike to the peak and back takes 7-10 hours, covering approximately 28km. Mother Kinangop respects nobody. We travel there to pay tribute to Kinangop, hoping to scale the treacherous summit. This is a tough hike; you must be reasonably fit to reach the peak. 2) Hike stats Distance: 28km Maximum Elevation: 3,906m Maximum Elevation Gain: 1,263m Duration: 7-10 hours Difficulty: Tough; be fit NB:Attitude matters much in Altitudes

This mountain is shy. The peaks are not visible on most days due to fog. This mountain is a beast. I think it's one of the toughest peaks of the Aberdare Ranges. But it is satisfying once you get there. 2 day hike preferred. The popular peak is accessible from Njabini side. However the highest peak of the Kinangop is harder to reach and is better approached from Mutarakwa side. Still doable from Njabini though. Being Aberdare, expect rain. You will walk through bogs. Annoying bogs. It's cold. But it's Kinangop.

As usual representing the Soundmax Brand, I joined a team of more experienced hikers in a Kinangop attempt, (experienced, meaning the pace is fast) descending at a pace of a km for every 20 mins. I have the perfect cheat though and you can try it on your next hike- whenever the hiking party pauses to rest - I lie down completely, close my eyes are breathe easy - It’s extremely refreshing and re energizing.
