The Moorlands: Mackinder's Camp As you ascend, the rainforest gives way to moorlands covered in giant lobelias and senecios, plants that look like something out of a prehistoric landscape. The terrain becomes more rugged, and the altitude starts to take its toll, but the views become increasingly stunning. Mackinder's Camp, located in the Teleki Valley, is a common stop for the night. From here, you can see the peaks looming above, a reminder of the challenge still to come. The Alpine Desert: Shipton's Camp Continuing up, you enter the alpine desert, a stark and surreal environment where only the hardiest plants survive. The landscape is rocky and barren, but the views are spectacular. You might encounter other climbers here, sharing stories and tips around a fire at Shipton's Camp, the last major stop before the summit attempt. The nights are cold, and the altitude can cause discomfort, but the anticipation of reaching the peak Summit Day: Lenana Peak The summit attempt usually begins before dawn, with climbers starting in the dark to reach the peak by sunrise. The air is thin, and every step takes effort, but the reward is worth it. As you near Point Lenana, the third-highest peak, the sun begins to rise, casting a golden glow over the surrounding mountains and valleys. Standing at the summit, you feel a profound sense of achievement and awe as you take in the panoramic views stretching as far as Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day The Descent The descent is quicker but no less beautiful, as you retrace your steps through the different ecological zones. Just want to say, this post will give details of hiking through all 3 gates, Naro Moru (I had gone), Sirimon & Chogoria. This is 1 day hike from the base camp & NOT about hiking to summit.

1-Naro Moru gate, 191 km from Nairobi.

From A2 road at Naro Moru town we travelled 17 km towards Mt Kenya to reach Naro Moru gate. 7 km is tarmac road & rest not tarmacked. Paid fee at gate & took mandatory security guard. (paid)

From park gate the road is very good. (Built with help from European Union) Vehicles can go 9.5 kms to reach Naro Moru river lodge met station, the base station where stay (Bandas) facility & security arrangements are available. This houses a meteorological station. The altitude is 3048 mt.

From this point hiking starts. There is a wide concrete road of 1.2 km long & then gravel, soil narrow mount road starts. We had walked 1.8 km & reached altitude of 3350 mt (66% air pressure) in 1 hour 15 minutes & took same time to return. Nobody felt mountain sickness as we all are from Nairobi & acclimatized to 1795 mt altitude with 80% air pressure.

This route is the steepest. If you calculate the gradient it is 1/7. Mt Kenya peak is 14 km by walk from Naro Moru river lodge met station & the altitude difference is 5199 mt minus 3048 mt.

2-Sirimon gate, 220 km from Nairobi.

I haven't gone. So I will edit this in future if I will go.

Before Timau town from A2 road one has to go 8.5 kms towards Mt Kenya to reach Sirimon gate.

From park gate to old moses mountain camp is 5 km, till this point vehicles can go. Altitude of this camp is 3350 mt which is an advantage. Mt Kenya peak is 14 km by walk from this camp.

3-Chogoria gate, 211 km from Nairobi.

I haven't gone. So I will edit this in future if I will go.

There is a airstrip near this gate. From Embu-Meru highway one had to go 30 km towards Mt Kenya to reach Chogoria gate.

From this gate vehicles can go 5 kms, just short of Chogoria Rock head campsite which has an altitude of 3300 mt. Mt Kenya peak is 12 kms from this campsite.
