Kryžkalnis partisan memorial — Local services in Kaunas County

The Lithuanian Partisan Memorial complex commemorates ~ 20 000 partisans, who have sacrificed their lives for Lithuania’s freedom in an unprecedented fight against the Soviet occupants in the post-WWII period. The location of the memorial is the village of Kryžkalnis (Raseiniai district) – close to the highway Kaunas-Klaipėda. Recently new parking lots have been constructed to accommodate the needs of visitors. The memorial is hardly accessible for people with movement disorders, though. The memorial complex consists of the following: a display of the history of partisan fighting at the bottom of the hill; a 25-metres-tall obelisk in the shape of a Lithuanian sword; a wall of remembrance with 20 000 surnames of the dead partisans, inscribed in steel in the shape of the cross of Vytis; a square (capacity up to 1000 people) with the so called-grave of the unknown partisan; and a chapel. There are plans to build a museum of partisan history in the future. Inside the chapel, that is already constructed, visitors can pray for the dead and light candles. Monolithic concrete blocks surrounding the chapel display the signs and names of the 9 partisan districts that existed during the partisan movement. Prakilni vieta. Memorialas susideda iš 25 metrų aukščio kalavijo formos obelisko, atminimo sienos su 20 000 žuvusių partizanų pavardėmis, išpjautomis Vyčio kryžiaus formos stelose, pagerbimo aikštės su nežinomo partizano kapu. Memorialas įamžina atminimą Lietuvos partizanų ir jų rėmėjų, paaukojusių gyvybes už Tėvynės laisvę nelygioje pokario kovoje prieš sovietų okupantus. 1944 m. Sovietų Sąjungai antrą kartą okupuojant Lietuvą, kilo didelio masto ginkluotas pasipriešinimas – partizaninis karas, kurio pagrindinis tikslas buvo kovoti už Lietuvos laisvę. Pasipriešinimo dalyviai buvo vadinami partizanais arba laisvės kovotojais. Ginkluotoje kovoje dalyvavo ne mažiau kaip 50 tūkst. žmonių, o visame pasipriešinimo judėjime – kaip pogrindžio organizacijų nariai, rėmėjai – apie 100 tūkst. Lietuvos gyventojų.
