14 thousand years ago, after the retreat of the last glacier from the western part of Lithuania, the first people - nomadic deer hunters - began to appear in this region. Convenient geographical location (the proximity of the Nemunas and Jura rivers) led to the intensive movement of ancient Baltic tribes and the mixing of their cultures in this area. In the 1st-6th centuries AD, an ethnic group was formed in the mentioned region, which clearly distinguished itself from the neighboring tribes in its culture. In historical sources, it is mentioned under the name of Scalovians/Skalvians.
