Stepping into the World War 1 Memorial Site in Lilongwe was like entering a portal to the past. Led by a passionate guide, I traversed Malawi's military history, delving into the trenches of World War 1 and navigating through army battles up to 2018. The guide details the fight for independence, uncovering the pivotal role of the first president and his enduring struggles. Each revelation deepened my understanding and admiration for Malawi's journey. It was more than a tour; it was an immersive experience that left me with a newfound appreciation for the sacrifices and triumphs of the past.. After the historical brief you go up to the watch points and can see the whole of Lilongwe from up there. As we ascended to the watch points, the city unfolded before us, it was breathtaking. Though the guide wanted to stop at the second highest platform, I climbed higher, feeling a mix of exhilaration and reverence for the sacrifices that brought me to this unforgettable moment in time. It's a historical site.

Guides pause at the second highest platform because they think that the guests may fear the ladder climb so if you are up for it , insist on going to the last watch platform. You...

Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was a prominent political figure in Malawi. He served as the country's first president after it gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964, holding office until 1994. Banda's rule was marked by authoritarianism and a one-party state, but he also implemented various development projects. He remains a significant figure in Malawian history, with a complex legacy that includes both admiration and criticism. Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was born on May 14, 1898, and he passed away on November 25, 1997. Initial resting was at the Private Residence, Area 4, Lilongwe, Malawi. Before the Government of Malawi built him a mausoleum next to the parliament building in...

Get up there! its not that scary.

There is usually someone to let you in and guide you up the tower. They give you a great history lesson about the structure and the purpose of the tower and the proposed park area.

Make sure to get all the way to the top.

The experience was much better...
