Mataking Island — Local services in Sabah

This island is actually like a trash dump , I have never seen so much rubbish on beaches as i have seen here in semporna . We visited this island due to the 5 star reviews on here, hoping that this Island would be better than the others . But sadly, these reviews and photos are not the reality . The fact there is a resort hotel here only makes it more sad . Surely the hotel and its staff would have some pride in its surroundings and would want to protect its stunning natural habitat ? Clearly not , they are either happy to wallow in this disgrace of an island or they are now blind to its sad condition . Seriously don't waste your time or money coming here , you will be sorely disappointed. I gave the island 2 stars purely for the beautiful coral reef found just off shore , this was actually one of the nicest we have seen in malaysia , can't say I fancy its chances of survival though . One of the highlights of our trip in September 2024 was the island hopping activity, which included a stop at Mataking Island. We had lunch on the island near the coast before proceeding with snorkeling. Unfortunately, the lunch experience was quite disappointing—the coastal area was littered with rubbish, making it unpleasant to sit and eat. Small island hosting PDRM n Army base and jetty patrolling the Sipadan area. For budget group just a basic open air lunch area on the beach with wooden table and chairs. But for luxury group they hv airconditioned building canteen hall and dedicated jetty about 300m away.
