Cet atoll fome les deux subdivisions administratives de Gaafu Alif et Gaafu Dhaalu. De 1959 à 1963, Huvadhu a fait sécession des Maldives en proclamant sa propre République, la république des Suvadives mais l'indépendance a été largement non reconnue par la communauté internationale. Gaafu Dhaalu est la partie Sud de l'atoll Huvadhu. Ses 18 485 habitants se répartissent sur 10 des 153 îles qui composent la subdivision. Sa capitale est Thinadhoo.
