The site is very small, archeologically, but it was my favorite to visit this trip. Entry was only 60pesos ($3usd) and the guard was very nice too... Then, once I arrived, I wasn't approached by anyone until I started walking toward a shop. A man introduced himself as Juan, he owns the shop. Next thing I knew, he's giving me a tour of the site and sharing what he knows about its history and that of the Mayans (of whom he's a descendant). He then let me explore on my own, didn't ask for anything. A woman who saw me exploring then sold me a coconut, also for 60psesos, but I'd actually been wanting one so that worked out... 😅 The site itself consists largely of just one small temple to Ixchel. However, there is also a beautiful catholic church immediately adjacent, literally ON its property I'm sure... It seems welcome there though, and perhaps inviting unto itself. I explored that property too some and then walked back to Juan's shop. I ended up buying something, but very hassle free, /and/ I believe I got a legitimately fair deal. It felt really good, everything about my experience there. Also, Juan and I got to connect on some topics such as healing and spirituality in...
Read moreBeautiful place to have a short walk. The small town is lovely, and the open air church is interesting. There is only one minor Mayan structure, but it’s still worth the visit. However, there were these two very annoying old Mexican ladies who tried everything to guide me to theirs and sell whatever they had on offer (I have not met any Mexican people as unpleasant as these two before!). When I arrived by car, they tried a lot to have me park close to theirs by constantly waving with small towels (of course, they do it for a “tip” - totally unnecessary at this public place and there is enough space to park your car anywhere), later they were hustling the entire time and wanted me to buy whatever they were selling. If it was for the two, I would definitely not come again! Otherwise, this is a nice...
Read moreI am genuinely astonished that this place has more than 3 stars - I hate to think how little of the world (or just Mexico) those people leaving 4 and 5 Star reviews have actually seen.
This place is a shambles - a dilapidated Mexican village with zero charm that is nothing more than a tourist trap (that clearly seems to be working). It is significantly less charming than the thousands of other small villages found across Yucatan and the whole of Mexico. Avoid at all costs.
The ‘Mayan ruins’ look as though they are doubling as someone’s garden shed - and the remainder of the village is soulless souvenir shops, there are hawkers everywhere - they even demand you buy coconuts in exchange for their ‘free’ parking.
It may have only been $2USD - but even at that price its...
