This is an amazing trip! It is well worth the drive and the cost for hiring a guide and boat. I live in Chapala, and my family came to visit for Christmas. We drove to Mezcala (about 45 minutes) and just hired the first guy that came up to us. He was young, but was born and raised in Mezcala, so knew the history of the island very well - and spoke quite good English. There were 6 of us total, and the cost for him and the boat was $1200 pesos. We tipped him extra, because he was so helpful and made sure my mom (who has had knee surgery and doesn't do well with hills or uneven ground) went slow and rested. He took us pretty much everywhere, explained all the important things, and answered all the questions we had. Note: there is a steep hill from the dock to where the ruins are, and the ground is uneven most of the way through. I highly recommend hiking boots. This was a lot of fun, very interesting, and is a reasonably short trip - we were only there for about 90 minutes, and the boat ride is about 15 min each way. I'm sure we had wanted to explore more, our guide would have been happy to accommodate us. If you like history, make sure you add this trip...
