There are a lot of rugs/tapetes in the Central Valley, but even among the artisans of Teotitlan Oscar is a master of his craft. The first thing I noticed upon entering was that his hands were stained with indigo because we caught him in the middle of brewing up a dye.
The shop he and his wife run is beautifully high end and homey at the same time. Before going to view all the rugs available Oscar will take you through a detailed demonstration of how they are made, from the shearing to the spinning, from the dying to the process on the loom.
I’ve been to Oaxaca four times, and have bought several rugs from the valley before, as have my parents before me. Oscar’s rugs are expensive and they should be because they are of the highest quality. The wool is even, deeply colored, tightly woven, and the designs are articulate and creative yet fully expressive of the traditions of the region.
