Popocatépetl is located 70 km southeast of Capital of Mexico, the Mexico City. Ciudad de México or Maxico City, is located in the Valley of Mexico and is the oldest capital in the Americas, first built by the Aztecs in 1325, known at the time as Tenochtitlan. Popocatépetl means"smokey mountain" in the indigenous Náhuatl language and is an active stratovolcano. All is well when it is calm and Beautiful. To watch the volcanic eruption from far far away is enthralling. Still volcanoes are Volcanoes and when they erupt and bring destruction God knows. Safety...

This is a classic Mexico hike. however you must spend the night before at high elevation. There are many campsites near the trail head at 4000m elevation. serious hiking gear required. Poles a must for coming down the numerous ravelling gravel slopes. I started from Mexico City that day and could not make it past 4900m. Body shut down but I did not expect to summit not having had time to acclimatize. Even if you make it half the way still a great scenic hike...
