Our group of seven hikers stayed at Subra Mountain Hut (Dom za Vratlom) last week, and the experience was absolutely outstanding in every way. This is the perfect retreat for hikers or anyone looking to escape city crowds and immerse themselves in nature.
The hut itself is beautiful, but what truly impressed us was how well-organized, clean, and comfortable it was. The hosts, led by Vlado, went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The food was exceptional - far beyond the usual "basic hiker’s meal" we’re used to in mountain lodges. It felt almost luxurious, comparable to restaurant-quality dishes!
The bunk beds were comfortable, arranged in rooms (ours had ten beds), and the bathrooms were clean and there is one on eachh flor, so there were no lines even when the hut was busy. Beyond food, the hut offers drinks (coffee, tea, beer, rakija, juice) at prices even cheaper than cafes in Herceg Novi.
The location is fantastic, nestled in the heart of a valley with trails branching out in all directions. It’s an ideal starting point for climbs to Subra, Odijevo, Radoštak, Robodo, Grab, and Veliko Ćedilo. For easier walks, you can take a nearly flat trail to Duboko and Žitni do (just 10 minutes away through a scenic meadow).
Access by car is possible via a rough macadam road (from the ruined Motel Borići), but only if you have a high-clearance or off-road vehicle. Otherwise, it’s best to park elsewhere and hike the ~3 km trail to the hut.
A truly exceptional mountain retreat—highly recommended! 5/5 stars...
Read moreI had the pleasure of staying at Subra Mountain Hut near Herceg Novi last week with six friends, and we spent three unforgettable days there.
From the very beginning, we felt incredibly welcomed. The hut is cozy, well-equipped, and thoughtfully maintained. The view from the terrace is absolutely breathtaking – the kind of place where you can lose track of time just watching the clouds roll by.
What made our stay truly special was the warm hospitality of our host, Vlado. He took care of every detail, making sure we were comfortable and happy. As someone with both gluten and lactose intolerance, I was deeply touched by how attentive he was to my dietary needs – I didn’t have to worry about a single thing. Everything was carefully prepared and adapted for me, with kindness and care that truly meant a lot.
The food was delicious, homemade and hearty – with the best Turkish coffee we’ve ever had! The outdoor shower added a sense of adventure and connection with nature that we all loved. Everything we needed was there and easily accessible.
In just a few days, Subra felt like home. If you're looking for a peaceful and authentic place to relax in nature – this is it. I’m so glad we found it, and I’d love to come back again.
Thank you, Vlado, for your kindness, care, and for creating such a beautiful place. We will...

This story began on Google maps. I was surfing the web and stumbled upon this hut, and as a big fan of mountain huts, I investigated further. I sent a message to Vladimir, the host of the hut to check if it was open in November. Vladimir was incredibly helpful, answering any and all questions I had, and thankfully there was availability.
We spent two wonderful nights here at Subra Mountain Hut. Vladimir greeted us at the door with a warm welcome, showed incredible hospitality and served us absolutely wonderful meals. The rooms are comfortable and warm, with bedding provided. You will feel at home sitting by the wood stove in the dining room, enjoying a drink with friends or family. The hut is nestled in a calm, peaceful valley which will whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of normal life.
You will be entranced by the unique mountains surrounding the calm valley. Peaks, caves, ruins, beech forests and more will meet any nature lovers wildest...
