Pung Gyen Gompa is a peaceful and sacred monastery high above Samagaun on the Manaslu Circuit. The hike takes about 6–7 hours roundtrip, leading through forests, yak pastures, and glacier views. When you reach the gompa, you’ll see incredible close-up panoramas of Mt. Manaslu and its massive icefall. The monastery itself is simple but full of spiritual energy, with colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind. It’s an ideal place to rest, reflect, and take photos far from the crowds. Great place for one day trip from Samagaun. For the best views start your day as early as possible. In the afternoon the mountains could be in the clouds and there will be no views. Besides, if you are in early spring and there is snow there, it will be frozen in the morning and it will be easier to walk. Great views of Manaslu. Must-visit day trip on the Manaslu circuit. We started the day at Shyala and finished at Samagaun. The way up to the monastery took us about 3 hours, with breaks, and from there to Samagaun another 3 hours. For me, the way there was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen!
