Previous reviews about the drive were concerning but it was short and manageable at a slow speed. The owners were very aware of it and are waiting on someone to do maintenance so I expect that this will be resolved shortly, perhaps on the 2nd of Feb as there was a sign saying access is closed that day. There was adequate parking on a busy day, so that was nice! The closest place for cash-out is the Maketu dairy/post office.

The diversity and quantity of marine life is really a wonder - the only comparable beach I've seen is Goat Island, NZ's oldest marine reserve. The beachcombing is great, lots of stuff you'd normally only see on older folk's shelves or museums. I'd like to see a geologist's overview of the volcanic rock there too. There were a few people out there collecting kina on the rocks and signs of a healthy snapper population.

It's also great for your average beach enjoyment. It's easy to spend hours there (BRING SUNBLOCK) and there is a lot of space to find a quiet spot. Don't forget your litter. Despite private ownership of the access, marine life are far more likely to get to your trash before the owners or a good samaritan. It takes a collective effort to keep this place relatively unspoiled for the future.

All in all, it is 100% worth a visit. Bring sunblock, cash, water and a bag to bring your...

I recently visited Newdicks Beach in Maketu and it was an unforgettable experience. The stunning, unspoiled beauty of the beach and its surroundings left me in awe. The clear, inviting waters and picturesque coastline make it a perfect spot for relaxation and water activities. The soft sand and gentle waves make it an ideal place for families to enjoy a day out by the sea.

The beach offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for long walks and taking in the breathtaking views. The friendly locals and fellow visitors added to the overall warmth of the environment. I also appreciated the clean and well-maintained facilities available at the beach.

The sunsets at Newdicks Beach are truly spectacular, providing an unforgettable backdrop for evening strolls or picnics. It's a great spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Whether you're looking to unwind, explore, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature, Newdicks Beach in Maketu is a must-visit destination.

I highly recommend Newdicks Beach to anyone looking for a serene and beautiful coastal experience. It's a gem that should not be missed when visiting the Maketu area. I can't wait to return and soak in the beauty of this incredible beach...

Beautiful long beach with wide, soft sand, and good swimming and surfing. It closes at 6PM daily (closes at 5 PM in the winter months) and has to be accessed with a privately maintained driveway at a cost of $5 per vehicle, per entry. It’s very much worth the small fee! If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, there is an access ramp at the parking lot, and you can drive along the beach, too! (Don’t try it if you don’t have a good 4-wheel drive...the sand is pretty loose in many spots and you will probably get stuck...) Amazing cliffs and scenic rocky beach along the northern part. It is never crowded, but the parking lot can get full on weekends or holidays. It is most definitely one of our favorite beaches in New Zealand!! Plan to spend...

What a lovely beach! There's a $5 entry fee to visit this private beach, but it's defintiely worthwhile. There is usually someone there to take the cash, but if not there's an honesty box as well. There's a long gravel drive from the pavement down to the grass parking lot, usually not very crowded. The beach itself is generally wide and sandy, though there are a handful of boulders in the water that make it interesting. On the north side, there are numerous tide pools where you and the kids can explore and fin crabs, snails, fish, etc. Keep in mind, it's pretty wild, which makes it so beautiful. But that also means no lifeguards and no facilities.
