We visited the Gold Fields Mining Centre when we visited New Zealand for our honeymoon. It was a short 45min drive from Queenstown and there was plenty of parking on site, with an epic bridge to cross over to access the mining centre and café/bar. We visited later in the afternoon at 2pm and unfortunately couldn’t order lunch as they had a booking for a birthday, but they gave us a 10% discount card to use if we came back later in the day. The entrance fee was $35pp, which we thought was worth the money as there was plenty to see inside. We enjoyed the self-guided walk around the mine, learning about the equipment used back in the day as well as seeing the China Town set up. Terrain is exposed and hilly, not ideal if mobility is an issue or if you're not wearing comfortable footwear. It was fascinating learning about the mining of gold and minerals during the tour and learning how to pan for gold from the guide. You can easily spend a half day to a full day here if you include lunch or an early dinner. Looking at the café menu, the pizzas...
Read moreMy pregnant partner and I were making our way back home to Queenstown after a stressful emergency flight she had made to Dunedin hospital - (I had driven over and stayed for a few days and I was driving her home.) With a sore back from sitting in the car driving towards QT, I suggested to my partner that we maybe stop at the Goldfields so she could get out for a stretch. We went through the doors and met Jenny - she was just the loveliest person, she took a genuine interest in us and even offered to Adele my partner if she felt like a look around at no cost - we were so happy and were both so impressed with such a kindhearted offer. Adele couldn’t walk very far but what we did see was amazing.. so authentic. I would highly recommend visiting even if it was just for a taste of Southland kiwi hospitality.. people like Jenny make New Zealand great!! Thank you so much - we will definitely visit again. Next time the...
Read moreIf you are interested in the history of Gold mining / prospecting - then this is a place to see. Was here on the 28th June 2020. Unfortunately it was quite cold and hosing down with rain so a full appreciation of the place was difficult. The Ladies at the centre were excellant and courteous and good to speak to and deal with. In particular the lady giving us the tour was great despite the rain and her getting drenched and the belt coming of the Stamper when she started it up. The stamper was therefore unable to go which was nobodies fault at all - (greasey from all the rain) but was dissapointing for someone with a specific interest in Gold Mining History such as myself. I really wanting to see that Stamper in action - however i will return. The Chinese Village - althoiugh recreations, were very interesting and enjoyable. I will be back but will make sure the weather is a bit...
