몽키 크릭은 이름 처럼 원숭이를 볼수 있는 곳은 아닙니다. 이곳에서는 흐르는 물은 바로 마실수 있는 빙하수가 흐르는 곳입니다. 홀리 포드 계곡 (Hollyford Valley) 내에 위치한 원숭이 크릭 (Monkey Creek)의 흐르는 물은 빙하의 순수한 물로 얼음처럼 상쾌한 맛을 직접 느껴 볼수 있습니다. Monkey Creek 이라는 지명은William Henry Homer의 개 (원숭이)에게서 그 이름을 따오게 되었습니다. Homer는 1800 년대에 피오르드 랜드 지역에서 조사원으로 일한 유럽인 인데, 그 자신은 살던 알프스의 호머 안장과 물론 안장 밑을 지나가는 호머 터널 의 이름을 따 왔습니다. 밀포드 사운드로 향하는 길에 호머 터널 역시 직접 볼 수 있습니다.

이 지역의 유명한동물은 키아 라는 야생 앵무새 입니다. 키아는 뉴질랜드에 살고있는 앵무새이며 현존하는 앵무새 중 유일하게 산악지대에 사는 종입니다.

예전에는 수가 많았으나, 영국의 식민화 과정에서 가축에 피해를 입히는 존재로 인식되어 많이 사냥당했고 현재 멸종의 위협을 받고 있습니다.

몸빛깔은 흐린 황록색이며, 날개의 아래쪽은 붉은색이며, 여름에는 산에 서식하지만 겨울에는 저지대로 내려오고 잡식성으로 곤충, 식물의 열매, 양과 사슴의 시체를 먹습니다.

또한 어린 양이나 병든 양을 공격하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

차를 타고 가면 이녀석 들이 차의 고무를 쪼아대는 습성이 있습니다.

If your pressed for time you could skip some of the prior spots like Eglinton Valley and Mirror Lakes. But this is where the splendour of Milford Sound really starts, so you should absolutely stop here. A great place to stop and really soak up the view.

Cross the road and get into the creek/stream bed for an awesome photo towards the Milford sound end.

Drivers do watch out for distracted folks in the parking area and also watch out for other vehicles pulling into the area. Some drivers can be pretty reckless or just distracted...
