We were there yesterday morning. Unfortunately, we did not have any luck to encounter any sea lions, but we did enjoyed our morning walking along this beautiful beach. Small parking by the end of the road, next to a lodge/BnB.

Surat Bay a lovely spot in the Catlins, a popular beach for the sea lions one must remember that during breading season the sea lions will go up into the sand dunes it’s a Long Beach but well worth the walk

It is a beautiful bay, worth to visit. I went here in the morning and couldn't see any sea lions. Perhaps, I picked the wrong time.

The Google Maps directions were slightly off for the trailhead, but there's a Surat Bay sign pointing to the right so we followed that. You can kind of see the bay from the car park but need to walk about 250-300 meters along the trail to get to it. The toilets are about 150 meters into the walk, then you walk about another 150 meters along a narrow path overgrown with grasses and small shrubs before coming out onto the beach. From there it's a WIDE and flat beach that you can walk for a long ways. From another reviewer's post, it sounds like you eventually would get to Cannibal Bay. We only walked about 1 mile before turning back. We saw 2 sea lions sleeping on the beach. One of them was HUGE! Beautiful beach, easy to access, and you can walk as far or as little as you prefer. AllTrails lists the trail as 4.1 miles out-and-back but 90% of that would be after you're already...

Absolutely beautiful beach. Walked along it during sunset and had a lovely time. It's very long so if you're looking for the classic "long walk on the beach" this can certainly provide! Probably walked for at least 40 minutes round trip and we only made...
