Waituna is close to flipping to a state of putrification due to ongoing run off primarily from Intensification or Dairy Farming within Southland and the Waituna Catchment. It needs looked after, it needs change and a reversal of policies that cant see past making $$$. Wetlands are a critical part of our natural environment. They protect our shores from wave action, reduce the impacts of floods, absorb pollutants and improve water quality. They provide habitat for animals and plants and many contain a wide diversity of life, supporting plants and animals that are found nowhere else. Waituna Wetlands deserve to be preserved and local and regional councils need to get off their arses to ensure...

Great to see the wetland being protected. The full walkway is pretty dreary and uninspiring however. You're walking through Kanuka scrub the whole way with very little view and no established access to most of the wetland ponds. You can't really see the wildlife except for the one viewing platform that's set back so far from the lagoon itself that you need binoculars to see any wildlife. I saw only fantails and mallard ducks. Track is overgrown in some spots and the vault toilet had a toilet roll dispenser with no toilet paper, so take some with you. Beautiful wetlands with a really cool decked walkway through a kanuka forest leading to the most amazing bird viewing shelter you'll ever see! We walked around to the beach and saw dolphins and albatross, just magical.
