Waituna is close to flipping to a state of putrification due to ongoing run off primarily from Intensification or Dairy Farming within Southland and the Waituna Catchment. Read moreGreat to see the wetland being protected. The full walkway is pretty dreary and uninspiring however. You're walking through Kanuka scrub the whole way with very little view and no established access to most of the wetland ponds. You can't really see the wildlife except for the one viewing platform that's set back so far from the lagoon itself that you need binoculars to see any wildlife. I saw only fantails and mallard ducks. Track is overgrown in some spots and the vault toilet had a toilet roll dispenser with no toilet paper, so take some with you.
